Repertoire: please play all bracketed sections of the attached excerpts, tempos as marked where applicable, which are being performed by the orchestra this semester. If no tempo is marked choose a tempo based upon recording examples you study online. All of these pieces are available on YouTube in score + audio format.
Instruments needed for audition, with number of bracketed sections in parentheses:
Snare Drum (1)
Cymbals (1)
Tambourine (1)
Triangle (1)
Xylo (2)
Timpani (2)
Sight-reading may be asked on any instrument
Listening: Do not attempt to play excerpts without listening to the music first online. YouTube has numerous recordings of all pieces. It’s a good idea to listen to several recordings, as well as play along with them, to understand the musical context of each part. (Stick to professional orchestras from major American and European cities, for best quality).
Instrument Access:
Please contact Christy Song (Instrumental Ensembles program coordinator) at instrumentalmusic@emory.edu, BEFORE you arrive on campus to start the process of receiving a key to the percussion practice spaces in the basement. Instruments will be in Rm 104 (basement level, door to immediate left of elevator, not labeled) or in Bunzl Studio (other side of basement), or Tharp Rehearsal Hall. This initial access is temporary; permanent access is granted following the audition week in late August.
Timpani: returning students, please play German style (low drum on right). Students auditioning for the first time may play American style (low drum on left), if you wish, but you’ll have to get into Tharp Rehearsal hall to do this. Do not turn the timpani in Bunzl around for any reason.
Tuning: you may use a tuning implement or keyboard for the first pitch only. Do not count on gauges being accurate.
Mallets/Sticks: use your own, when possible. The Emory mallet and stick bags will be in Rm. 104 or Bunzl or the back wall cabinets in Tharp if you need other options.
Rests: If rests in the excerpts last more than a few seconds, you may skip ahead to the next entrance with only a slight pause.
